Dear Rotarians,

I have got some updates from the Rotary Club of Langkat in Medan.......

Quote
"Please send the body bags quickly or they will be too late to be useful.

These are the additiona items that are needed urgently now:

1. Masks, gloves, boots, disinfectant , sprayers

2. Drips sets, iv catheters

3. antibiotics, anti diarrhoea, antipyretics

4. anal gloves

5. antiseptics

6. antimalarials, chloroquin etc

7. bandages, handiplast

8. vitamins

9. cough medicines

10. babies milk

11. general medicines generic or branded

12. field hospitals

To all Rotarians & supporters, salkomdop04-05, & others. Thank you all for your fantastic support. This will be the first of many progress reports we will send you,

This is a joint relief efforts undertaken by Rotary Club of Langkat & Aceh Sepakat (NGO). Aceh Sepakat or United Aceh Foundation is a non-political, non-sectarian NGO/LSM founded 36 years ago to further the social life and well being of Acehnese in Sumatra outside of Aceh. Aceh Sepakat has 750,000. Yes thats right 750,000 members. Anyone born as an acehnese or married to an acehnese or having lived in or been interested in Aceh can be a member of Aceh Sepakat. They have their own public school, public hospital, nursing college, orphanage, mesjid and function centre.

Their members come from all walks of life. They are very capable to organise a relief operation of the kind that is required to cope with the Tsunami disaster. Rotary Club of Langkat is fortunate to be able to partner an organisation such as Aceh Sepakat [AS]Rotary Club of Langkat has a common member with Aceh Sepakat by the name of PP Ibrahim who has worked in Aceh for many years & has many connections in Aceh.  His wife, R Darsina comes from Tapak Tuan in the affected area of Aceh & she has many family in Meulaboh and in Banda Aceh.

It is now past midnight and many volunteers are still working to load donated items onto the trucks.

DAY 1: Mon 27 - Organisation, mobilisation & preparation.

A Posko is set up at Jl Mengkara no 2, at the office of Aceh Sepakat.

Day 2: Six [6] trucks total 90 tons of supplies were sent to the north coast to Langsa, Lhokseumawe, Sigli, and Banda Aceh. Our trucks are the first to go into the disaster area and the first to bring relief.

Day 3: getting better organised with 2 trontons and 5 trucks total 125 tons despatched.

Day 4: Thursday 30th - 5 trucks, 95 tons of supplies sent. The mayor of medan and the governor came to co-ordinate their efforts with ours. We visited the national Posko at the Polonia airport; they have a literal mountain of supplies in their hangar but not enough planes to send them to site and not enough volunteers to do actual work of loading although they have plenty of people standing around. We decide we will continue as we are complimenting their efforts.

One of our members flew to Meulaboh today with ANTV (private Indonesian TV station) to see first hand what we can do there & how soon we can get in there. At a meeting tonight decisions were made to improve our organisation; To avoid fatigue, we will get many more volunteers on the ground; Aceh Sepakat will call in teachers, nursing students & members; The President of Rotary Club of Langkat is also the chairman of a large Youth Organisation, AMPI & he will call in volunteers from there.

Our web site design is nearly ready - we will let you know when it is finished

We are in this for the long haul. After the immediate relief ops are over there will be needs for scholarship funds for orphans and others plus massive needs for micro credit etc.

Our first receipt of funds from outside Rotarians arrived. Thank you.

Now to the messages for you our supporters:

1/ we suggest that you all concentrate on fund raising except for special needs which we will inform you.

2/ there is already a mountain of clothing and a mountain of foodstuffs and of water waiting to go and these same goods are starting to stack up at the receiving end too and we are sure that with what is already in the pipeline there will be enough clothing and enough foodstuffs.

Last year after the Bahorok disaster the same thing happened. There was a mountain of second hand clothes and instant noodle so much so that people did not want to eat the instant noodle again and people ended up selling the used clothes and the instant noodle to get money for other needs.

3/ after the immediate relief ops are over school children will need school books, bags, uniforms, shoes and equipment to go back to school. Any clubs that want to participate can start organising to get school supplies ready or send us the money and we will organise the purchases and channel them through to the children in need.

4/ conditions are changing by the hour; we will keep you informed

5/ the situation here is that the Rotary Club of Langkat are working to provide aid to Aceh Province where the worst of the disaster is and the Rotary Club of Deli is working in Nias.

6/We have excellent doctors in our team

Rotarian Dr Alfred Satyo our member is a senior forensic doctor in Medan & ex member of Rotary Club of Medan and trained most of the young doctors going to Aceh for the emergency aid at present.

Our president Dr Suwelen runs 3 private hospitals in Langkat.

I myself am an expert in village development and infrastructure especially water supply & sanitation

If you want to help Aceh please forward your donations to Rotary Club of Langkat at Bank BCAMedan branch (a/c no 195 068 7378). You can contact me around the clock on +62 812 633 5185

Our Posko is at Aceh Sepakat, Jl Mengkara no 2 , MEDAN

Best regards,

PP Ibrahim Champion"

Dear Rotarians

A lot of info is availbale at these sites in both districts on Tsunami disaster relief efforts.
Goto:
Others could add more.

While proper coordination is not in place,
we can still get important things done.

Collections in cash and in kind are in full swing.
Teams from many Rotary clubs are already moving to disaster areas to help.
Goods, medicine etc are being despatched daily by many Airlines offering free service to disaster zones.
(eg. Air Sri Lanka, now MAS, RSAF etc)
The whole community is being mobilised to do whatever, wherever possible.
Interactors, Rotaractors, Rotarians, non Rotarians and citizens of the world are in this.

Work with any organisation, Red Crescent, Red Cross, Lions whatever NOW.
Do your bit. Don't wait.

Afterall we are all leaders. Use your iniatiatives.  LEAD.

Regards
PP Dr Ho

MERCY MALAYSIA SENDS THIRD MISSION TO ACEH AND FIRST MISSION TO SRI LANKA 31/12/2004

http://www.mercy.org.my/
31st December 2004

MERCY MALAYSIA is collaborating with Malaysian Airlines in its medical and humanitarian relief efforts in Aceh and Sri Lanka, acting as MERCY Malaysia’s partner for Aceh and Sri Lanka. The airlines is providing MERCY Malaysia free airfare and excess baggage for MERCY Malaysia’s mission members deployed to Aceh and Sri Lanka.

MERCY Malaysia will be deploying its third emergency medical relief mission to Aceh on Sunday, 2nd January 2005. Currently, MERCY Malaysia has deployed nine members to Aceh, including its President Datuk Dr. Jemilah Mahmood.

MERCY Malaysia mission members are currently posted at Hospital Tentera Kesdam, and are currently focusing on surgical cases there. Once there is no longer the need for the MERCY Malaysia team to support surgical cases, the doctors will then set up Basic Health Units in the affected areas.

Before the tsunami incident, there were a total of six hospitals in Banda Aceh. Today, Hospital Tentera Kesdam is one of the two that has survived it. MERCY Malaysia Chief Operating Officer, Shareen Shariza Dato’ Abdul Ghani, explained that, “All the medical personnel in the four hospitals perished in the disaster. This is why it is extremely crucial we deploy the third team into Aceh. The current available medical personnel present at the scene at the moment cannot cope with the current medical needs.” MERCY Malaysia’s third mission will consist of nine medical volunteers who will be equipped with medical supplies.

Today, MERCY Malaysia’s first emergency relief team to Sri Lanka departed for the country at 2pm this afternoon. The team is made up of Dr. Palasuntharam Shanmuhasuntharam an Executive Member of MERCY Malaysia, Dr. Nasir Mohamad, and MERCY Malaysia staff, Praemeenah Poobalan who will be assessing the situation and strategise for future missions.

MERCY Malaysia is appealing to the public and organisations for donations to support its medical and humanitarian efforts for the tsunami victims. Donations can be made in cash, and cheque can be made to the MERCY Malaysia Humanitarian Fund (and on the reverse side of the cheque, write SE Asia Earthquake Appeal) Alternatively, donations can also be deposited directly into Maybank Account No. 5621 7950 4126). All donations to the MERCY Humanitarian fund are tax exempted

Dear PP Adil,

I read your letter with great interest.

I have been in action out of Singapore helping organise things
with the (1) Rotary Clubs of District 3310,(2)the Singapore Red
Cross, (3) the YMCA of Singapore and many RCs in Australia
Sri Lanka and the UK.

We have sent Body Bags, medicines, medical/surgical equipt.
etc. to Bandar Aceh (directly not thru Medan where a lot has
got stuck!!).

We need now:-
(1) Water Purification tablets say, 10,000,000!!
(2) Drinking water production equiptment - I have a
source for this in Japan. Unfortunately it runs on
     electricity.
(3) Medicines and vaccines - the latter may arrive from
Australia where Rotarians are at work.
(4) Portable generators.
(5) Money, plenty of this!! It is coming in luckily.

Can you help? Sending it to Sumatra or Sri Lanka or
Thailand is not a problem, from Singapore. This can be
done easily & expeditiously and for FREE!

Many thanks, Adil.

ps. PP Loon Shin, pls resend the above to everyone
and EVERY Club you are in touch with.

Dear Dr Ho

As President of the World Association of Detectives (WAD) and a Past
President of RC Kampong Baharu (D3300) I have initiated our worldwide
membership assistance with regard to the disaster relief efforts. One of our
members from Germany is in touch with a company producing water
purification tablets. We will work out the fund part of it but what we need
to know is the logistics and how to get the tablets (very small and easy to
transport) to the places needed? And any specification of the tablets, we
need expert advise on these to be able to co-ordinate the logistics of it.

Thank You

Adil Naidu

Happy New Year wishes and Seasons Greetings to all.

I'm most happy to be doing something for the Tsunami victims in Aceh on the first day of a New Year.

In particular, I'm most touched by the vibration of Dr. Ho to connect and keep members informed of new developments taking place in our service and action-oriented organisation called Rotary.

More importantly as I pen this email, the enthusiam of Dato Ham who constantly update me with his changing orders from 2000 to 2500 to 3000 to 5000 to 6500 to 7000 to 7500 and now 8000 body bags is a remarkable effort and will not
be forgotten by the perished soul of Tsunami victims in Aceh.

The power of teamwork and the power of networking is taking shape at lightning speed. Thanks to the newsgroup and to all who have given us the encouragement  to make our effort meaningful.

My conversation with Margaret Soo of Mercy Malaysia this afternoon has given us a better insight of how they operate during emergencies and how they transport medical items to affected areas speedily.

I have full confidence in Mercy Malaysia and I'm sure Dato Ham and Dr.Ho will agree with me that Rotary can work hand-in-gloves with Mercy Malaysia whose President Dr. Jemilah is personally in Aceh currently.

I will discuss with the body bag supplier on Monday 3rd Jan 2005 on the packing and lorry space requried for the transportation from Penang to KL. Upon final inspection of the ready bags, I will notify Dr. Ho of RC of Kulai to remit online payment to the supplier before taking delivery.

Thereafter when the body bags arrive in a KL warehouse of PP Lim Eng Hoe (019) 3376171, Margaret Soo or reps from Mercy Malaysia may collect the items. Margaret has suggested to take photos of the consignment for inventory purposes which is a good idea even for our records especially accountability to our Sponsors.

Since the quantity is 8,000 pieces of body bags, it is likely that we make into two consignments - 3000 and 5000 or 4000 and 4000 subject to factory's production output by Tuesday 4th Jan 2005.

Would appreciate if PP Eng Hoe can provide the contact details of his Transport company in Penang or Bukit Mertajam to me ASAP.

Stay tuned to this channel for more info and updates.

Greetings.

First of all, I thank all of you for your efforts in providing assistance to the victims of Tsunami in Acheh.

I would just like to update the information that seems to be travelling to and forth your discussion.
For your information, we had just deployed our third mission to Acheh this morning. The team consisted of 6 specialists of different specialities mainly on the surgical side. Our team are currently based in the Kesdam military hospital; one of two hospitals that are left standing still. We currently already have 10 personnels on the ground.

Our team had been bringing the relief items with them as part of their baggage and it is transported straight to the hospital by the military. We are flying MAS to Medan and from there, the military plane to Acheh. This arrangement had so far worked well with us. Also, we will be sending donation collected in Nationwide Express through TLDM on Wednesday which would most probably be channeled to BAKORNAS. At the same time, we are making arrangement with Transmile to send by air selected relief items which include the body bags pledged generously by yourselves.

At the moment we are working hard to finalize the details and I would furnish you latest by Monday morning to assist in your logistics. My team is aware about all this communication and we appreciate your effort to keep us informed. We also appreciate that communication to the field is limited due to the very trying circumstances our team on the ground is facing. We assure you that every effort is made for the contributions to be useful and distributed accordingly. Dr. Fauziah had left with the team this morning and my communication officer, Hailey, had been briefed about this effort. At this point forward, I would be the contact person for this effort unless informed otherwise.

MERCY Malaysia extends its gratitude to you and your organization for your kind contributions and look forward to a fruitful working relationship.

Thank you very much.

For MERCY Malaysia,
YANG Wai Wai
EXCO Member

Dear All,

5-7 days is too long; it might be useful for you to know that, that we
cannot delay, was the reason why RC of Marina City had gone ahead with its
order of 5000, human body bags, with another 5000 or more awaiting confirmed orders.

We have sent our bags to Medan on Friday, although they may be more expensive than what has been quoted in  Malaysia.. But decay cannot wait and the survivors  and  volunteer workers are the ones to suffer the most at this stage.

Can there be another way to have these bags ready in a day or two? We did insist on this with our last despatch, and are ready to do more, but we have
to exercise discretion here, so that no one misunderstands.

Your views could help arrive at a most workable decision. Meanwhile, the relevant governments are meeting to discuss a coordinated approach to the current and such  disasters. But Can we wait?

Thank you for your efforts in helping the survivors of this disaster.

Yours in the Service of Rotary

Wilfred James.
