For some of us who may not understand, just to share...
Regards Adil Naidu RC Kampong Baharu
Dear Colleagues,
Several members have questioned the need for ongoing support related to water purification tablets even though bottled water is available in some affected areas. In my prior life, I have a degree in geology and worked for many years in contaminated groundwater cleanup and remediation of hazardous chemical sites.
You may be interested to know that once a tidal wave has intruded into a coastal plain area, the localized shallow groundwater aquifers remain contaminated for decades. The only cost-effective solutions to this problem are to establish new potable sources of water: typically by drilling wells into other unaffected shallow (or deeper) groundwater aquifers, or by building new pipelines bringing fresh water from other areas, or building desalination plants that can handle the population of nearby communities.
When the tidal wave waters recede, the shallow groundwater (drinking water) aquifers remain contaminated with saltwater. Also remember, that the magnitude of a 9.0 earthquake is far greater than that of an 8.0 (Richter scale); a 9.0 unleashes approximately 340 times more energy than an 8.0 quake. In part, this is why an earthquake of magnitude 9.0 and above is called "catastrophic". This extremely powerful quake had already jolted many of the buildings which crumbled under the velocity (speed) and tremendous pressure of the tidal wave front.
With thousands of coastal communities in financial ruin and with devastated resources (which were often limited to begin with), the feasibility of building this type of infrastructure is going to be difficult to say the least. Just re-building the food and water supply chains is going to take many months and years. Money is critical to accomplish this major rebuilding effort even in areas where these facilities did exist prior to the tsunami.
The emergency relief effort continues and the huge task of rebuilding tens of thousands of communities is only just starting.
Many of us have given repeatedly and this is what will be needed to rebuild a significant portion of the world's communities. The small island of Kuaui did rebuild successfully after much of the island was decimated during the hurricanes in the early 1990's-with a little help.
Regards, Candice

With a number of interested donors from USA having problems trying to transport the donated items to Aceh, one of my committee members, Rtn Steve Ng, has contacted the MD of MAS for help.
MAS is willing to provide free aircargo from Newark airport (New Jersey) in the USA (I suppose other points of origin is also acceptable for as long as the sectors/routes are currectly served by MAS) to Medan via KL.
Please ensure that the measurement of the packing of the aircargo is adequate for a Boeing 737 to accommodate. MAS only uses this aircraft from Penang/KL to Medan.
However, MAS would prefer the R.C. of Kuching Central to the point of contact. Please let me know if there is a need.
As you know our country Sri Lanka has been severely affected by tsunami disaster on 26th of December. More than 30,000 people lost their lives and also a million people have lost their homes. Around 80,000 houses were totally destroyed.
So far as Rotaractors, we have been helping them by providing food, water and medicine. But we feel that we shouldn't stop from one step, we should proceed what we begun. So we have decided to launch a tsunami disaster fund to help the victims. For that we urgently need your kind assistance.
You could kindly assist us by providing medicine, cloths and financial assistance to build houses for the displaced people. Please be kind enough to remit your generous contributions in favor of Rotaract Club of Kolonnawa A/C No.03202650220561 peoples bank city branch, borella. We would like to do a joint project with you to help these people.

Thank you for your message regarding the recent disaster in Asia. The World Community Service program of Rotary International provides information to Rotarians on current disaster relief efforts on the RI Web site: www.rotary.org/programs/wcs/disaster/reliefefforts.html. Please see below for additional information regarding Current Relief Efforts.
Contributing to The Rotary Foundation:
A decision was made by the President, Chairman of The Rotary Foundation and the General Secretary, that The Rotary Foundation will accept contributions earmarked for Solidarity in South Asia. Checks will need to be mailed in to the lock box listed below, made out to The Rotary Foundation/Solidarity in South Asia on the payee line. Receipts will be issued where applicable for tax purposes, however, these contributions will not receive TRF recognition credit. Contributions will be used for long-term assistance. Specifics on how this money will be distributed to those in need is not yet available.
Lockbox address: Rotary Foundation P.O. Box 75133 Chicago, IL 60675-5133
Post Your Rotary Club or District's Current Relief Efforts:
If your club or district is planning to assist the countries affected by the recent disaster and you would like Rotarians to assist in your efforts, please provide me with the following information so that it may be posted on the Current Relief Efforts pages of the RI Web site: www.rotary.org/programs/wcs/disaster/reliefefforts.html.&nbs p;
ยท A brief description of the disaster and how many people have been effected ยท The items (if any) that your district will be collecting ยท The address and name to send any donated goods to ยท The name, phone number and e-mail address for a contact person that people may contact for additional information
ยท The name of the account that checks should be made payable to if you are collecting funds.
Please note that RI cannot post bank account numbers on the web site and the bank account may not be in the name of an individual. "District XXXX Disaster Relief Funds" would be an excellent bank account name.
Please note that when organizing your club or district's relief efforts, it is important to work closely with an experienced disaster relief organization such as the International Federation of the Red Cross. Often, many Rotarians donate and collect items such as blankets, clothing and medical supplies after a disaster. If these items are being shipped oversees, they may be held up in customs and arrive when there is no longer a need for them. If your club or district is planning to collect or distribute donated goods, please stay in contact with the assisting disaster relief organizations for updated information on current needs. This will ensure that you are only collecting and distributing items that will be used. Also, please encourage international donors to send cash donations so that they may be used to purchase exactly what is needed when the funds arrive.
Volunteering:
Please note that Rotary International does not place volunteers at disaster sites. Some clubs and districts may need volunteers to help, however, others may not be in a position to accept volunteers at this point. Please refer to the Current Relief Effort page (www.rotary.org/programs/wcs/disaster/reliefefforts.html) for contact information for clubs and districts organizing relief responses.
If you are interesting in volunteering, there are a number of disaster relief organizations you might contact. Google.com has provided a list of relief organizations that are responding to the recent disaster (www.google.com/tsunami_relief.html <http://www.google.com/tsunami_relief.html>). There is also information posted on the UN's OCHA Web site (www.reliefweb.int/w/rwb.nsf <http://www.reliefweb.int/w/rwb.nsf>).
Long-Term Assistance:
Have you ever wondered what happens when all of the disaster relief organizations go home? When the immediate need for food, medical supplies, and water have been fulfilled, many disaster survivors are left in need of long-term assistance in order to rebuild their lives. The thing that makes RI so unique is that we have established a network of over 32,000 clubs worldwide. Implementing successful, long-term projects is what we do best! A local club might plan a WCS project to rebuild a school destroyed by the tsunami or two international clubs might plan a Matching Grant project to replant damaged crops. So, while an emergency response is necessary at this time, I encourage you to start thinking of how you and your club can provide long-term assistance for your community.
World Community Service Program:
For information regarding the WCS program, please refer to the RI website: <http://www.rotary.org/programs/wcs/index.html>. By registering a project as a World Community Service project, your project will be listed on the Projects Exchange. The Projects Exchange is an on-line, searchable database, which lists over 500 projects in need of contributions, volunteers and donated goods. If you do decide to register a project, I will be sure that it is posted on a priority basis and will refer Rotarians to the project that are interested in assisting your area on a long-term basis. I've attached some additional information regarding the WCS program of RI.
Humanitarian Grants Program:
For information regarding the Matching Grant program of The Rotary Foundation, please refer to their webpage: <http://www.rotary.org/foundation/grants/index.html>. Also, I suggest that you contact your district governor to inquire whether there are district grant funds available in order to assist your community.
I wish you much success in your humanitarian service endeavors! Please do not hesitate to contact me if I can be of further assistance.
