Land Rover Club member on way to Krabi dies in accident
http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/singaporelocalnews/vi ew/125218/1/.html

SINGAPORE : The Land Rover Club, on the way to Krabi in Thailand to help victims of the tsunami disaster, suffered a loss themselves.

On Saturday morning, a member of the 30-car convoy lost control of his vehicle, crashed and died. The accident happened along Malaysia's North-South Highway, near Alor Star.

The convoy was just 60 kilometres from the Thai border.

Fong Peng Khoon, who would have turned 46 on Monday, died after he apparently lost control of his vehicle along the highway.

Fong's sister told Channel NewsAsia that her brother is a divorcee with a 10-year-old son.

A member of the Land Rover Club who was travelling with the convoy, arrived at the scene some 2 to 3 minutes after the accident.

Indi Tulsi, Land Rover Club, said, "When I arrived there, Fong was already taken out of the vehicle. There were some professional nurses there who were trying to resuscitate him. And they did a very good job and he was starting to breathe on his own again. By then the ambulance arrived and they took him to Sungei Petani Hospital. But I understand he collapsed again on the journey.

"In the morning we started our journey at about 7.30 and the tragedy struck at about 8-8.15. We were just half an hour into our journey and this is not because of fatigue or anything like that." - CNA 8-8.15. We were just half an hour into our journey and this is not because of fatigue or anything like that." - CNA

Dear PP Dr. Ho,

My attempt to post the following on the District egroup was unsuccessful. I would be grateful if you could kindly forward it to the group while I sort things out.

Thank you.

Subject: Convoy To Krabi- Aid to Tsunami Victims

At approximately 2.30 pm New Year's Day I received a call from Singapore, presumably from Rtn.Phillip Kwan, informing me of the tragic course of events, the likelihood that remaining members of the group were in Alor Star, and requesting that RC Alor Star render whatever assistance possible. I was able to contact Rtn. Indi on his handphone and it transpired that they were in fact in a hotel in Sungei Petani closer to where the accident occured. It is my layman's feeling that Rtn. Indi sounded extremely traumatised and distressed by the passing of Mr. Richard Fong.

President Suseela of RC Sungei Petani was informed and immediately contacted Rtn. Indi and group, rushed over to the hotel with a few other members of RC Sungei Petani to see what help could be offered.

Some medical supplies amounting to several car loads from the vehicles not continuing to Krabi were handed over to RC Sungei Petani who delivered them to the local health authorities operations center the same evening.

This morning President Suseela and SP Rotarians will assist in whatever way possible with formalities and arrangements for the return of the late Mr. Richard Fong's body to Singapore.

It is my understanding that Tan Sri Eric Chia, who has a residence in Sungei Petani and who heard about the incident, will be picking up the tab for all expenses at the Park Avenue Hotel for the Singapore Rotarians.

Dear Rotarians

It is with sadness I read the news and death Fong Peng Khoon, one of the members of the Rotary-led group of relief workers from the Rotary Club of Singapore, on their way to The Rotary Club of Krabi disaster zone in Thailand.

We extend our deepest sympathies and condolences to the family and the Rotary Club of Singapore.

On  a sad note, on behalf of RC Kampong Baharu, please convey our condolences to the Rotarians of RC Singapore and the family of Rtn Fong Peng Khoon on his untimely demise.  May God Bless his soul.

Keep up the tremendously good work, Rotarians are contributing. But there is still alot that we would need to do.

Dear Rotarians and Family members of RTn  Fong Peng Khoon,

It is with great sadness that we learn of this tradegy. In his service above self spirit, the late Rtn Fong, has shown  us a shinning example of how caring he is, and he took action where there is need. In his journey of Rotary service, he is a man we respect. His memory and example should be preserved and emulated by others and the young.
We salute you Rtn Fong Peng Khoon.

On behalf of our club, Rotary Club of Kota Kinabalu members and President Tony Seow send his condolences.
May his memories be cherished and remembered.

Frankie Fu Ka Onn
Secretary
RCKK
Rotary Club of Kota Kinabalu

moderator's comment: Apparently, PDG Philbert Chin told me the late Fong Peng Khoon is not from the Rotary Club of Singapore.

Dear Pres.Jega et al,

Many thanks for your help and prompt action in our time
of trouble. Let me say on behalf of all Rotarians in District
3310 and myself - Thank You Very Much.

It is in situations like this that Rotary & Rotarians are truly
appreciated. Let us pick up the pieces and labour on. We
are working hard here in Singapore, coordinating efforts in
helping Indonesia (Sumatra in particular). The DG of D3400
is already in Bandar Aceh assessing the situation.

I myself with many able Rotarians, are working with the
Singapore Red Cross, Indon.Red Cross (PMI), and the
Armed Forces of Indonesia and Singapore who are on the
ground in Sumatra. The first shipment was :10,000 body
bags and basic medical supplies.....this left on Friday.

Please keep in touch, and God Bless you all.

Yours In Rotary

Centennial District Governor
Dr. Ivor Thevathasan JP
RI District 3310

Dear Centennial DG Dr. Ivor and PP Phillip,

I thank you for you messages of appreciation. However, I need to point out that my part in the entire chain of events was merely relaying telephone messages. Thanks are actually due to President Suseela and the Rotarians of RC Sungei Petani who were the ones who were hands on.

My intention in posting the message was for the information of Rotarians  only.

Yours in Rotary Service,

S. Jegatheesan,
President,
RC Alor Star.
