March is Literacy Month! This is when we focus on the importance of literacy and education in our humanitarian service. Being literate does not just mean having the ability to read a book or a newspaper. Being literate means being able to comprehend the instructions on a medicine bottle, a set of directions, or a job posting. Literacy means being part of the larger society. It means inclusion, and it means empowerment.
Those who cannot read or write, whether they are children or adults, are cut off from important information in ways too numerous to count. They are less likely to be healthy and more likely to be poor. And perhaps most critical of all, parents who cannot read are more likely to raise children who cannot read – perpetuating the cycle of illiteracy, and of poverty.
We in Rotary can do so much. We can help others learn to read – and learn to help themselves. I am pleased to inform you that together with Rotary Club of Semarang Kunthi and Rotary Club of Armadale, we have got the approval from The Rotary Foundation for the ‘Train the Trainer’ project in West Timor. The aim is to train local teachers to teach English as a second language both within the Roslin Orphanage and in the surrounding community. This way, the children can become gainfully employed in the tourist industry and also advance to and beyond tertiary education level via their local Undana University.
The District Award for 2009-2010 has been extended to 31 March 2010. We are submitting Advanced RYLA for recognition since it is a prototype as well as Best Public Relations Award by President-Elect Captain Budi Soehardi. This year, we are also submitting for RI Presidential Citations for both Rotary E-Club of 3310 and Interact Club of ITE College East.
Have you registered for the 20th Rotary International District 3310 Assembly from 16th to 18th April 2010 to be held at the ZON Regency Hotel, Johor Bahru? I strongly encourage the incoming Board of Directors, and new Rotarians, to attend and support this important Rotary event. The motto of a District Assembly - the training ground for Rotarians - is "Enter to learn, Go forth to serve".
I am to pleased to report that we have pledged S$2,000 towards PolioPlus Fund at the RI World Understanding & Peace Day. We shall recognise PP Edmund Chew with a PHF for his generous contribution of S$1,500.
For the coming physical meeting on 11 March 2010, we have invited Ms. Leny Painan, CEO of Genius Minds Pte Ltd, to present a very interesting seminar on "Dermatoglyphics". Allow her to lead you using your fingerprints to reveal your innate learning potential and your peak hidden potential. You will learn what are your primary and secondary character traits as well as your parenting style. You will visit your strengths and weaknesses and what strategies you can adopt to improve your weaknesses and strengthen your strengths.
Our webmaster had started work on redesigning and revamping our website. We expect to see a new workable system very soon. In the meantime, please continue to login to our current website and remember, The Future of Rotary is in Your Hands!
Yours faithfully David Lau President Rotary E-Club of 3310
