The development of symphonic culture between China and Singapore, and its contribution to bilateral friendship, could not have been achieved without the dedication of two key figures:
- Mr Zhou Keng, Director of the Shanghai Nine Trees Philharmonic Orchestra
- Mr William Wei, 27-year-old Singaporean pianist
This Singapore–China Gala Symphony Concert has been initiated and realised through their efforts. From childhood, William Wei demonstrated exceptional musical talent and quickly emerged among Singapore’s gifted musicians. In 2008, he became the only pianist that year to receive the National Arts Council’s Gifted Young Musicians’ Bursary, supported by the Rotary Club of Singapore East, which enabled him to pursue advanced studies at leading arts institutions in New York. Despite his young age, he has already received numerous international awards. More importantly, he has consistently devoted himself to advancing China–Singapore friendship and cultural exchange. He warmly welcomed the Nine Trees Philharmonic Orchestra to Singapore and personally travelled to Shanghai on multiple occasions for visits and exchanges. His family background also carries symbolic significance — his grandfather was an Eighth Route Army veteran who later transferred to the Fujian Grain Department.
William Wei has been invited for scheduling an exclusive interview with Jiefang Daily. With abundant written and video coverage, he is also recognised as one of the featured artists of the 24th China Shanghai International Arts Festival.
