President’s Message for February 2010
Posted: David Lau @ 07-February-2010 6:27pm
David Laus avatarFebruary is World Understanding Month! On 23 February 2010, the Singapore Clubs are celebrating the RI World Understanding & Peace Day at Orchard Hotel. I strongly encourage our club members to support this event and to donate generously to the Polio-Plus fund. Let us work together and pledge a PHF for our Rotary E-Club.

Your contribution to Polio-Plus will help Rotary to raise US$200 million to match US$355 million in challenge grants received from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The resulting US$555 million will directly support immunization campaigns in developing countries, where polio continues to infect and paralyze children, robbing them of their futures and compounding the hardships faced by their families. As long as polio threatens even one child anywhere in the world, children everywhere remain at risk. The stakes are that high indeed.

I am pleased to report that we supported Racket Sports Asia Tennis Championships 2010 on 30 January 2010 in their charity event to raise the fund for the Roslin Orphanage based in Kupang, West Timor. The total amount raised was S$2000 including the amount pledged by the organiser.

For the next physical meeting on 11 February 2010, we are going to usher in the Year of the Tiger with a roar and potluck dinner. Our PR Chair, Rtn Gracy Yap will present a very interesting numerology seminar on "Forecast 2010. Your Numbers for Good Fortune and Luck". Let her leads you to unlock the keys to understanding how you can maximise your own luck using numbers and avoid unfortunate numbers and make this a prosperous Tiger year for you.

I hereby wish you all a very Happy and Prosperous Lunar New Year and remember the Future of Rotary is in Your Hands!

Yours faithfully
David Lau

Our respect to the late former Agong of Malaysia, the Sultan of Johor.

He has been a strong support of Rotary and our dialysis programme.

Building Communities Bridging Continents
Posted: Dr Ho @ 19-January-2010 8:34am

Building Communities -- Bridging Continents' is 2010-11 RI theme

After taking the stage to the tune of "California, Here I Come," RI President-elect Ray Klinginsmith announced the 2010-11 RI theme, Building Communities -- Bridging Continents, during the opening plenary session of the 2010 International Assembly .

Klinginsmith said he arrived at the theme after reviewing RI themes of years past. He noticed that only a few spoke to non-Rotarians.

"As a result, I decided to search for a briefly stated theme that would fulfill two objectives: the first to explain Rotary to non-Rotarians, and the second to validate our work for Rotarians," he said. "The words I have selected to describe Rotary's current mission and to highlight our achievements are what we do best: Building Communities -- Bridging Continents. "

The president-elect described how his 50 years of Rotary experience have contributed to his focus on communities at home and abroad. For example, as a Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholar, he studied for a year in South Africa, becoming the first student from his small town of Unionville, Missouri, USA, to study abroad.

The timing of the theme announcement, which took place in the evening, was a break in tradition from past assemblies and a reflection of Klinginsmith's willingness to embrace change. He encouraged district governors-elect to reexamine traditional procedures that were no longer best practices and to begin new traditions where appropriate.

He also paid homage to Rotarians of the past who helped raise Rotary to a place of prominence on the world stage. He urged district governors-elect to meet the past RI presidents and other former officers in attendance to deepen their connection to Rotary's past.
